Bergerac airport closure Jan - March 2012 - Flight Alternative

AIRLINE CityJet has been quick to offer travellers flights to the Dordogne region after the announcement of the closure of Bergerac Airport for three months.

CityJet are to offer two flights a week, operating Friday and Sunday, between Brive Airport - Vallée de la Dordogne and London City Airport starting on January 6 until March 23, 2012.

The news comes after Bergerac Airport announced all flights will be stopped between January 9 and March 23, 2012 as work is undertaken on the runway.

CityJet are also offering a number of flights over the Christmas period.

First-timers

Morning
Kick off at the Tourist Office (12 Cours du XXX-Juillet) - an early coffee at the Café Napoleon III almost next door will put you in the right, wood-panelled frame-of-mind to tackle the Triangle-d’Or, Bordeaux’s show-piece centre. Here, colonial trading wealth ripped out medieval squalor to replace it with avenues, stately open space and neo-classical declarations of Bordeaux’s belief in the rightness of riches. It’s a stunning 18th-century ensemble which compels decorous behaviour. This is also where the posh shops cluster, so keep a tight grip on wife and credit card. And so, via the Place-des-Quinconces, to the riverfront, now a breathing space of greensward, promenades, rescued warehouses and conviviality. Walk upstream to the Palais-de-la-Bourse, the stock exchange in the days when merchants had wigs and standards, and expected splendour.

Lunch
Lunch right here, at Le Gabriel (10 Place de la Bourse; 0556 300080, www.bordeaux-gabriel.fr). A two-course bistro midday meal costs €21.

Afternoon
Plunge into the ancient urban tangle of the St Pierre district directly behind. The message of fine old churches dissipates fast amid a throbbing warren of medieval streets and comely little squares, fringed with bars, restaurants and (especially on Rue Ste Cathérine) shops which normal people can afford.

Evening
You deserve dinner at Le Chapon Fin (5, Rue Montesquieu; 0556 791010, www.chapon-fin.com, menus from €60). The extraordinary interior-rockery décor has hosted presidents and divas and so is clearly right for you. Then wander back to the St Pierre district for a nightcap at any of several zillion bars. The baroque décor of La Comtesse (25 Rue-du-Parlement-St-Pierre) always suits me, though I’m twice the age of other customers.

Old hands

Morning
Start south of the centre, before the 12th-century façade of Ste Croix church, on Place Renaudel. It’s a most pleasingly peaceful spot. There’s something medieval in the way flea markets, bric-à-brac and hallal butchers gather round the flamboyant Gothic church of St Michel and its free-standing spire.
Continue to Rue Rousselle, hub of the salt-fish trade. Sixteenth-century philosopher Montaigne lived at N°25. His dad was in pickled herring. Now up Cours Alsace-et-Lorraine to the magnificent St André cathedral and its independent tower, both built when the English ran Bordeaux (though we didn’t put the golden Virgin on top). The nearby Musée d’Aquitaine (20 Cours Pasteur, www.bordeaux.fr, free) has a superb historical collection, from the Romans through to today. If you visit only one museum in Bordeaux, this is it.

Lunch
At the Bistro-du-Musée opposite the cathedral (37 Place Pey-Berland; 0556 529969, www.lebistrodumusee.com, two-course menu of the day, €13.50).

Afternoon
Amble to the riverfront and hop a tram downriver to the Chartrons district. First job: get the shopping out of your system in former riverside warehouses converted to shiny factory shops (www.quaidesmarques.com/bordeaux). Then explore the Chartrons. Seventeenth-century English, Irish and Flemish wine-merchants set up business here, outside the city walls, because city-fathers wouldn’t tolerate them in the centre. The district is now a mix of fine wine houses, narrow workers’ streets and bohemian overtones. Meanwhile, the Musée d’Art Contemporain (7 Rue Ferrère, www.capc-bordeaux.fr, €5) has everything, from the terrific to the incomprehensible, which you expect from good contemporary art museums.

Dinner
Dine back towards the Ste Croix church in the tiny Rue Porte-de-la-Monnaie where chef Jean-Pierre Xiradikis has established an empire of five eateries, from a simple café-bar to top-of the range La Tupina. The latter has been bringing south-west farmhouse cooking into town for years (0556 491555, www.leportdelalune.com, dinner from €60). Then nip to the Quai-de-Paludate. At N°58, the Comptoir-de-Jazz is the mature choice for live music and a glass or two

banks, post office, internet café, cash machine, petrol station, garage, large garden centre and hardware store. There is an active community association.

There are very good travel links to nearby towns and cities and the house is a 30 minute drive from an ever expanding local airport served by year round low cost airlines.

House for Rent - nestled amongst the vines

Imagine waking up every morning and looking out the window to this fabulous view.

This gorgeous house is surrounded by vines and yet is only a 7 minute drive to Bergerac and 10 minutes to the very lively bastide village of Eymet.

The house is spacious and has been tastefully furnished but has been empty for a while so is looking for a family to breathe life back into her again.

As with most houses in France, the kitchen is the hub of the house and what a lovely hub this is.

There is a dining table with seats 6 comfortably and two beautiful hutch dressers full of gorgeous china ware.

The first of the 5 bedrooms is situated on the ground floor. This is a large bedroom and comes complete with queen sized bed and a single bed.

All that is needed is a colourful french quilt (boutis) and the room would be complete.

No need to worry about storage as there is plenty with lots of cupboards and drawers in this room.

The ensuite bathroom is light and airy and has a charming salle de bain complete with panelled bath tub.

All that is required is some fabulous French bath foam and perhaps a few candles.....

Up the stairs on the first floor, you will find 4 additional bedrooms........

The first of which, has has 2 single beds, and adjoins the 2nd bedroom .......

Where you will find, two gorgeous French Bateau style beds.

In the third bedroom on this floor, you will find another gorgeous bateau style bed and a gorgeous carved armoire and set of drawers.

There is a bathroom at the end of the hall with shower, toilet and basin.

At the end of the hall you will find a large and spacious mater bedroom which comes complete with sitting area and ensuite bathroom.

Fabulous place to eat....

Last Friday, I was lucky enough to be taken to La Tour des Vents restaurant which is a michelin starred restaurant, 20 minutes drive from Maison No. 20.

The food and views are superb and the service is second to none. It is one of the best meals that I have had in this area.

They have a fabulous website which is a must to visit as the photos of both the food and the views are out of this world.

I would also recommend a trip to Chateau Monbazillac which is a few minutes drive away as it is a great place to visit and learn about both the area and also the wonderful sweet white wines that the area is famous for.

Candle lit walks around the village

Just a reminder that the candle lit tours are taking place this weekend, the firs tis the tour in English, on Friday night at 21h45.

The second is on Saturday night again meeting at 21h45 outside the tourist office and this one is in French.

This weekend is a great weekend to be in Eymet as there are many events taking place as part of the Medieval Festival including the banquet on Sunday night with costumes available for hire at the tourist office which is situated in the main square.

Why go now?

At any time of year, there is a magical quality to this city of elegant limestone buildings, wrought-iron balconies and wonderful mascarons – carved stone faces above windows and doors. But, bathed in spring sunshine, the capital of Aquitaine is currently looking its very best. Come now to take in an evocative production of West Side Story at the opulent Opera House (1) (00 33 5 56 00 85 95; opera-bordeaux.com) on place de la Comédie, which runs during April. And enjoy Bordeaux’s ongoing spirit of enterprise. Over the past decade, the city has been wonderfully revived – so much so that it won Unesco world heritage status in 2007.

The renewal projects continue, particularly in the St-Michel district just south of the centre, while new projects are also being undertaken. In November, work started on a hi-tech bridge that will span the Garonne river 2km north of the centre and a major wine museum is in the pipeline.

Touch down

Bordeaux’s Mérignac Airport is 10km west of the city centre. City bus 1 (00 33 5 57 57 88 88; infotbc.com) runs from outside Terminal B to place des Quinconces (2) in the centre, linking with the city’s tram system. The journey takes about 45 minutes, with departures every 45 minutes from the airport between 7.45am and 10.45pm. As with all the city’s trams and buses, a ticket, valid for an hour, costs €1.40.

The city’s St-Jean railway station (3) is about 1km south of the centre and is served by tram C. This is also the destination for the Jet’ Bus service from the airport, which also runs every 45 minutes but has a one-way fare of €7.

Get your bearings

The Romans first established Bordeaux, developing a settlement on the left bank of the river Garonne, which curves here in the shape of a crescent moon. This sweep of water later gave the city’s harbour its name, Port de la Lune.

In the 18th century, Bordeaux was radically redeveloped – and it became an architectural gem. But by the late 20th century its glorious streets and buildings had become grimy and downtrodden. These have since been revived, along with the old quayside. The city centre is set in the Roman and medieval heart of Bordeaux, between place des Quinconces (2) and the remnants of the ancient walls at the Grosse Cloche bell tower (4). To the south is the up-and-coming St-Michel district, an appealingly bohemian area with a lively student vibe. To the north is the newly restored, newly cool Chartrons area, traditionally the haunt of merchants and wine traders.

The largely car-free city centre is very walkable and also served by three ultra-modern tram lines whose wires are buried underground. The main tourist office (5) is at 12 cours du XXX Juillet (00 33 5 56 00 66 00; bordeaux-tourisme.com) and is open 9am-6.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9.45am-4.30pm Sunday. A second is at St-Jean railway station (2) (9.30am-12pm and 2-5.30pm Monday to Friday; Saturday and Sunday in summer); and a third tourist office (6) is at 28 rue des Argentiers (10am-1pm and 2-6pm daily, but not Sunday mornings).

Check in

The iconic Regent Grand Hotel Bordeaux (7) opposite the Opera House (1) at Place de la Comédie (00 33 5 57 30 44 44; theregentbordeaux.com) has recently been given a sparkling refit, reaffirming its status as the smartest place to stay in town. Doubles from €290 without breakfast. In the Chartrons district, L’Avant Scène (8) at 36 rue de Borie (00 33 5 57 29 25 39; lavantscene.fr) is a boutique chambre d’hôtes offering nine individually treated rooms in a former merchant’s house. Doubles from €95 without breakfast. The two-star Hotel Continental (9), is centrally located at 10 rue Montesquieu (00 33 5 56 52 66 00; hotel-le-continental.com), has 47 comfortable rooms from €89 for a double with breakfast included.

DAY ONE

Take a view

Get a magnificent view of Bordeaux by climbing the 231 steps to the top of the cathedral’s belltower, Tour Pey-Berland (10) (00 33 5 56 81 26 25; monuments-nationaux.fr; open 10am-12.30pm and 2-5.30pm daily, except Monday; €5). It was built in the mid 15th century separated from the Cathedral of St-Andre (11) so the vibrations of the bells would not disturb the ecclesiastical building. Afterwards, visit the cathedral opposite (10am-noon and 2-6pm daily, except Mondays when it opens 2-7pm; free), which effectively comprises two glorious Gothic buildings in one, with the nave built in the 12th and 13th centuries and the choir and transepts constructed in the 14th century.

Take a hike

Opposite the west end of the cathedral is the gracious Palais Rohan (12), built in 1774 for the bishop of Bordeaux and now the city hall. Guided tours are conducted every Wednesday at 2.30pm; €3. Head south between the city hall and the cathedral (11) and turn right into rue des Frères-Bonie and Bordeaux’s judicial district. The complex at number 30 is Richard Rogers’ striking Law Courts (13), a creation of glass and thatch with the courts themselves housed in huge cones modelled on wine vats. Turn right into cours d’Albert. On the left, at number 20, is the wonderful Musée des Beaux Arts (14) (00 33 5 56 10 20 56; bordeaux.fr; daily except Tuesday 11am-6pm; free to the permanent collection, which includes works by Titian and Rubens). Turn right again into rue Montbazon, whose name changes to rue des Trois-Conils. Carry straight on into the heart of old Bordeaux. At place St-Projet (15) turn right down rue Sainte-Catherine, a Roman road from the third century. Cross cours d’Alsace et Lorraine and turn left along rue des Ayres, passing the Baroque St-Paul des Dominicains (16) (10am-noon and 2.30-7pm except during church services; free). Continue to place Fernand Lafargue (17). Turn sharp right into rue St-James, marked with scallop shells that show it is part of the pilgrimage trail to Santiago de Compostela. At the end of this cobbled street stands the 13th century Grosse Cloche (4) belltower and gate. Just before the gateway, turn left into an area of 18th-century houses, winding along rue Teulere and then turning left into rue Neuve. Turn right down cours d’Alsace et Lorraine to reach the waterfront. Then stroll left, passing the 15th-century gate of Porte Cailhau (18) before reaching Bordeaux’s grandest sight: place de la Bourse (19), built by architect Jacques Gabriel in the 1730s.

Lunch on the run

Once the seat of Bordeaux’s medieval government, place du Parlement (20), behind place de la Bourse (19), was turned into an elegant market square in 1754. Today it is fringed with cafés. Karl at number 6 (00 33 5 56 81 01 00; karlbordeaux.fr) is a stylishly laid-back outfit serving salads from €8.50.

Cultural afternoon

To explore Bordeaux’s newest museum, head to the Chartrons district. Set in an 18th-century merchant’s house, Musée du Vin et du Négoce (21) at 41 rue Borie (00 33 5 56 90 19 13; karlbordeaux.fr) tells the story of the city’s wine and its traders. The ground floor and basement traditionally served as a warehouse and it is here that you take in the displays about how wine was aged and mixed, how bottles were developed and more, while the floors above are still neatly occupied by a vintner. Open 10am-6pm daily, Thursday to 10pm. The €7 entrance charge includes a choice of two wines for you to sample.

An apéritif

Make that a taste of the finest of Bordeaux wine. Max Bordeaux Wine Gallery (22) at 14 cours de l’Intendance (00 33 5 57 29 23 81; maxbordeaux.com; 11am-8pm daily except Sunday) opened last October with the aim of both promoting the vineyards of the area and changing the elitist image that they have acquired. This is a sleek and serious tasting centre where, as yet uniquely, you can sample grands crus by the glass. Invest in a tasting card (from €25 and valid for a year), then select the wines you would like to taste, with prices starting at €2 for a 25ml measure.

Dining with the locals

Since it opened last spring, pretty Brasserie Bordelaise (23) at 50 rue St Remi (00 33 5 57 87 11 91; basseriebordelaise.fr; closed Sunday) has become a firm favourite in the city centre. Mains include magret de canard at €17 and grenier médocain, a local type of pork charcuterie, at €14, with an extensive choice of wine.

DAY TWO

Sunday morning:go to church

The huge church of St-Michel (24) is a fine example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture – albeit with striking, modern stained-glass windows replacing historic glass destroyed in 1940. The windows were replaced in the Sixties by poignant and jewel-like works by Jean-Henri Couturat and Pierre Gaudin. Sunday mass is at 11.30am. To fully explore the church, return in the afternoon – it opens 2-6pm daily, admission free.

Window shopping

Every Sunday from about 7.30am until roughly 2pm, an antiques and flea market spreads around the church of St-Michel (24) and its tall bell tower.

Out to brunch

Adjacent to St-Michel church (24), Passage St-Michel (25) at 14 place Canteloup is an Aladdin’s cave of antique and bric-a-brac stores housed in a 19th-century banana warehouse (open daily, noon-6pm or later). On its ground floor is Le Passage St-Michel Brasserie (00 33 5 56 91 20 30), furnished a la Belle Epoque. It opens noon-2.30pm and 7.30-11pm, and serves baked salmon medallions at €12.80.

Take a ride

North of place Bir Hakeim (26), catch an A tram heading east in the direction of Floirac Dravemont. This will take you over the Garonne on the elegant Pont de Pierre (27), offering a great panorama of the city. The Garonne’s width and strong currents defied bridge building until this stone crossing with 17 arches was finished in 1822.

A walk in the park

Leave the tram at the stop called Jardin Botanique (28), the second stop beyond the bridge, in La Bastide, a developing district of Bordeaux. The eponymous Botanic Garden (29) (00 33 5 56 52 18 77; bordeaux.fr) is just to the north-west. Completed in 2003, it is a long, thin strip of land echoing the shape of the apartment blocks around it. Careful planting shows 11 different eco-systems in Aquitaine, along with a aquatic and vertical gardens. An impressive greenhouse contains aloes, palms, carnivorous plants and more, with binocular stands offering close-up inspection of the vegetation. Open 8am-6pm daily (until 8pm in summer), admission free. The city has an older botanic garden (30) on the left bank of the Garonne south-west of the Chartrons district (open 7am- 9pm in summer, free).

The icing on the cake

The Musée d’Art Contemporain (31) at 7 rue Ferrère (00 33 5 56 00 81 50; bordeaux.fr) is housed in a 19th-century warehouse once storing sugar and spice. Its now a stunning gallery of modern art and dynamic exhibitions on painters, sculptors and architects who have made a significant contribution to the art world within the past 30 years. Open 11am-6pm daily except Monday, Wednesday until 8pm; €5.

Give me a taste for the landscape

The most exciting way to get an overview of the region is by floating above it. This can be arranged with Aquitaine’s flying wine-maker, Michel Fonvielhe, who combines managing an organic vineyard with his passion for hot-air ballooning. Flights take-off from the field beside his property, the Domaine de Durand (00 33 5 53 89 02 23; domainededurand.com) in St-Jean de Duras.

Exactly what course you take will depend upon the vagaries of the wind: you could find yourself floating above Bordeaux, or heading in the opposite direction towards Bergerac. Either way, the scenery can be spectacular, especially in spring, when the white plum blossoms take on the appearance of snowdrifts.

This aerial perspective reveals why the wine from some vineyards is more highly prized than others. “I flew recently over Château d’Yquem,” remembers Fonvielhe, referring to one of the region’s most famous vineyards, “and you could see quite clearly that the vines there were growing much better than those of the neighbouring château where the terrain isn’t so favourable.”

In theory, flights can take place all year round, but the season tends to last from Easter until the end of October. Trips cost €200 for each of four people and last for up to 90 minutes. Flights take-off in the early morning and two hours before sunset, and should be booked in advance.

What makes this region so special?

Aquitaine produces more high-quality wine than any other French region, thanks to its terroir: a combination of factors that include micro-climates and soil composition. The region is divided into districts that include well-known names such as Médoc and Entre-Deux-Mers, and lesser-known ones such as Irouleguy, a tiny area in the Basque country around St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. These are then sub-divided into smaller communes such as Monbazillac, in the Bergerac district, which has a 16th-century castle (00 33 5 53 61 52 52; chateau-monbazillac.com) whose vineyards still produce a renowned sweet white wine. Tastings are available at the château, and also at the nearby Cave de Monbazillac, on the road between Eymet and Mont-de-Marsan (opens 10am-12.30pm and 1.30-7pm Tuesday to Sunday).

The communes are made up of individual châteaux, such as Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte (00 33 5 57 83 11 22; smith-haut-lafitte.com) in the village of Martillac, in the Graves district. Like a number of the region’s larger wineries, it offers daily tours. Pre-booking is advisable, particularly as not all are in English. Many of the region’s vineyards welcome visitors, and offer both tasting sessions and the opportunity to buy.

Most wine districts can be explored by following the local route des vins, usually a scenic road through the vineyards. The route des châteaux, for example, follows the D2 road from the outskirts of Bordeaux along the west bank of the Gironde river, taking in many of the major wine estates in the area.

The best way to find out about a region and its wines is to visit the wine centre or maison du vin, which tends to offer an exhibition on vine-growing and wine-making in the region, and a small shop selling local vintages. One of the best of these is on the outskirts of Duras, a pretty little town dominated by a castle with medieval origins. The Maison des Vins de Duras (00 33 5 53 94 13 48; cotesdeduras.com) is designed to appeal to visitors who may know little or nothing about wine when they arrive in the region.

“We want to train people so they can leave us and set off on a journey of discovery of our wines,” explains Corinne Lacombe.

Among the displays is an interactive exhibit with different items to smell; there are daily free tastings of local wines; quizzes for adults and children; information about local wineries open to the public; and a vine garden with shady picnic areas.

The Maison opens 10am-noon and 2pm-5.30pm Monday to Friday throughout the year, 10am-1pm and 2pm-6.30pm Monday to Saturday from mid-June to mid-September.

Where can I learn more about wine?

Among the courses on offer in the region, French Wine Adventures (00 33 5 53 22 72 71; frenchwineadventures.com) offers two-hour introductory sessions every Tuesday afternoon at 2pm during the season for €15. They are run by Caroline Feely, who, with her husband Sean, makes wine at the Château Haut Garrigue in Saussignac. The sessions begin with a tour of the château’s organic vineyard before moving inside for a more formal explanation of the appellation system, followed by a tasting. Feely also runs classes specialising in the grand cru classe wines, and a food and wine matching class takes place every Thursday afternoon at 3pm during the season; the cost is €25.

There are several other wine schools in Aquitaine. These include the CIVB, based at 1 Cours du 30 Juillet (00 33 5 56 00 22 66; bordeaux.com), which offers a range of training from intensive courses to two-hour sessions for those wanting to find out about wine as part of a holiday.

What about something high-tech?

Try La Winery, a modern complex on the Rond-Point des Vendangeurs in Arsac en Médoc (00 33 5 56 39 04 90; winery.fr), just outside Bordeaux. The contemporary building is a striking contrast to the traditional style of the region. In the words of one local wine-maker: “This is where you’ll see the future.”

Part wine supermarket – with a selection of over 1,000 different wines – part wine bar and restaurant, with sculpture garden attached, La Winery also can divine the “wine sign” of its visitors, indicating the wines they might prefer to drink. Small groups are given an hour-long blind tasting, in which they are asked to rate each wine according to how much they like it. A computer analyses the results and allocates a wine sign from a selection of eight, ranging from “muscular” to “aesthete”. This is accompanied by a booklet containing suggestions of appropriate wines – which are all, unsurprisingly, stocked in the supermarket.

While this resembles a clever marketing ploy, the tutored tasting is still interesting and informative. La Winery opens 10am-7pm Tuesday to Sunday, with wine sign sessions taking place at 11am and 3pm, and also at 5pm during the summer. Sessions cost €16.

Can I join in?

In recent years, many of Aquitaine’s wine makers have begun to realise the advantages of opening up their châteaux, and have devised ways to involve their visitors.

Alongside wine classes, Feely of Château Haut Garrigue (00 33 5 53 22 72 71; wildearthvineyards.com/vineshare) also runs a vine-share scheme. Rent a row of vines for a year for €99, and you will be invited to make two visits to the château: in spring, to help with general maintenance; and during the harvest, when there is a chance to join in with the picking and to collect a case of wine.

The Médocaines (lesmedocaines.com), a group of four wine-making women from the Médoc, also enlist visitors to help with the harvest – usually between mid-September and mid-October, and on four days they run harvest workshops. Dates will be available from the tourist office in Bordeaux (12 cours du XXX Juillet; 00 33 5 56 00 66 00; bordeaux-tourisme.com).

Participants helping with the harvest at the Château Paloumey (00 33 5 57 88 00 66; chateaupaloumey.com) join the other pickers for lunch, followed by a tasting of previous vintages at the Château du Taillan (00 33 5 56 57 47 00; chateaudutaillan.com). At other times of year, the Médocaines run blending workshops, a kind of “mix your own” session, which combines fun with a serious lesson in how great wines are made.

I want to immerse myself

Book in at the Sources de Caudalie (00 33 5 57 83 83 83; sources-caudalie.com), the world’s first wine therapy spa. Located in Martillac just outside Bordeaux, and in the middle of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte vineyards – its an ideal place to relax.

The idea for the treatments came from a university professor who watched the wine-making process and remarked that what was being thrown away – the grape skins and pips – could be put to good use as skin treatments whose added attraction is their anti-ageing properties. This idea, conveniently combined with a patch of land in the middle of the vineyard that was too muddy to grow grapes, led to the construction 11 years ago of a luxury hotel and spa. A variety of treatments are on offer, ranging from merlot wraps and cabernet massages to facials using vine flower mousse. Prices start at €60.

How do I get around?

Among the many ways to tour the region’s vineyards are cycle paths and walking trails, with maps available from the local tourist offices. At the Château Lanessan (00 33 5 56 58 94 80; lanessan.com), near Cussac-Fort-Médoc, visits to the winery, with its ancient hall where the barrels are stored, can be followed by a tour of the estate in a horse-drawn carriage; the total cost is €125 for up to five people.

The nearby Château Maucaillou in Moulis-en-Médoc (00 33 5 56 58 01 23; chateau-maucaillou.com) has its own helipad, and can provide helicopter tours of the Médoc, flying over the vineyards of St-Julien and St-Estèphe, before looping round over the Gironde river and the Margaux vines.

In St-Emilion, the Train des Grands Vignobles (00 335 57 51 30 71; visite-saint-emilion.com) makes up to 10 departures a day from outside the Église Collégiale, taking around half an hour to trundle through the countryside past 18 of the nearby vineyards. The train operates from Easter until mid-November, and tickets cost €6.

Where should I stay?

Accommodation in Aquitaine is as varied as the wine that the region produces. Rooms at the top end of the scale, such as those at the Château Cordeillan-Bages (00 33 5 56 59 24 24; cordeillanbages.com) in Pauillac, may be associated with a wine château – in this case Château Lynch-Bages. Double rooms here start at €203, with an extra €28 for breakfast. The hotel and wine château are located nearby the village of Bages (villagedebages.com), a reconstructed wine village with a bakery, upmarket store and bistro.

Other luxury accommodation is linked to some of the region’s numerous golf courses. These include the Château des Vigiers in Monestier (00 33 5 53 61 50 00; vigiers.com), an attractive and secluded location that includes a 27-hole golf course, and where rooms are available next to the first tee from €180, with an extra €17 for breakfast.

There are also several spa hotels in the region, among them the Hotel Château Grand Barrail (00 33 5 57 55 37 00; grand-barrail.com), a 19th-century château set in an attractive three-acre park in the heart of the Saint-Emilion vineyards a mile or so from the village itself. Completely renovated in 2008, it has 41 luxurious and individually-decorated rooms, and an attractive spa, where treatments are available from €55. Rooms at the château start at €290.

With more modest stays in mind, some 15 years ago the Gites de France organisation began expanding its collection of rental properties in the Gironde to include gites bacchus, properties located among the vines, run by wine growers or wine makers, and intended to appeal to wine-enthusiasts. Prices vary according to size and time of year, but gites are available from €250 per week.

The scheme has now expanded, and includes properties in other parts of the region, a mixture of gites, usually rented by the week, and chambres d’hôtes, where rooms are available on a nightly basis.

Among the properties on offer are the Ferme Etxeberria (00 33 5 59 37 06 23; domainemourguy.com), a lovely family house in Ispoure, which has double rooms available from €50.

GREAT WINES: THE GRAND CRUS

In 1855, the Emperor Napoleon III asked for the wines of Bordeaux to be ranked, in preparation for the Paris Exposition of that year. The resulting classification system is a list of chateaux, the so-called “Grands Crus Classés”, which are sub-divided into five groups. In the most prestigious, the First Growths were – and remain – the châteaux of Lafite Rothschild (lafite.com) and Latour (00 33 5 56 73 19 80; chateau-latour.com) in Pauillac; Margaux (chateau-margaux.com), also in the Médoc; and Haut-Brion (00 33 5 56 00 23 30; haut-brion.com), from the Graves region. Mouton Rothschild (00 33 5 56 73 21 29) was added in 1973.

A separate list, with Château d’Yquem at the top, ranked the sweet wines of Bordeaux in the same year, and during the 1950s, the Graves and St-Émilion regions – which were omitted from the official classification – drew up their own lists. Pomerol has no classification, despite its bestknown wine, Petrus, being one of the most expensive in the world.

* The biennial Bordeaux Wine Festival (bordeauxfete-le-vin.com) takes place this year from 24-27 June. Among the attractions will be a “wine road”, lined with pavilions offering the wines of the region, many of which will be available for tasting. Tasting passes, including 12 vouchers and a glass, are available for €15. There will also be master classes and vineyard visits, music, fireworks and a son et lumière show.

The smart guide to... the Dordogne
If you want to celebrate the best of France, head to the southwest and experience the beautiful Dordogne region

Head to Sarlat for cobbles - and cheese from its Wednesday market

I’ve been to the Dordogne many times and never once played cricket. Despite what you’ve heard, this place really isn’t a summertime extension of the home counties. Remote in the French southwest, it has only just been tamed, and then not entirely. A twist in the track and you’re lost among forests, cliffs, rivers and caves leading darkly to prehistory.

The region has ever been beautiful, backward and insurgent. (All those castles weren’t just ornamental.) It’s only 140 years since peasants in Hautefaye roasted and ate a noble.

The dining’s improved lately, though it remains meaty, and a tough past has mellowed into a honey-stoned heritage of sunlit valleys and recreational canoeing. Yet it’s still better known locally as Périgord, the ancient name, than as Dordogne, and it still runs to farming rhythms. Give yourselves a week, minimum, to fall in with them.

The plan

Head first for Sarlat, among the finest historical centres in France. Its network of tiny streets, passages, squares and fancy buildings articulates an idealised medieval and Renaissance past for present times. It’s outstanding, as are the hill-topping bastide town of Domme and La Roque-Gageac, wedged wonderfully between golden cliffs and the River Dordogne.

Slightly north, the Vézère valley was bountiful Euro HQ to Stone Age man. He left dozens of prehistoric sites. To avoid grotto fatigue, we’re suggesting just three. First, Lascaux II (Montignac; 00 33-5 53 50 70 44, semitour.com; £7.90), where the world’s greatest cave paintings are reproduced. Second, the Abri Font-de-Gaume (Les Eyzies; 05 53 06 86 00, hominides.com; £6, book ahead), where the original polychrome cave art includes a stag licking a doe’s face. Its message of tenderness connects across 17,000 years. Finally, La Roque St Christophe (Peyzac-le-Moustier; 05 53 50 70 45; £6.50), a kilometre-long cliff into which man built his home from 55,000BC through to the Hundred Years’ War. You may roam and climb in his footsteps. The kids will love it. So will you.

Castles, too, come by the truckload. Here are two favourites, both in the Dordogne valley. Castelnaud (05 53 31 30 00, castelnaud.com; £6.80) is a medieval item that soars high and mighty above village and river. It’s full of arms and war machines. Nearby, the Renaissance Milandes (05 53 59 31 21, milandes.com; £7.40) traces the bittersweet story of its former owner, France’s great interwar topless artiste Josephine Baker. This is significantly more interesting than peering at period furniture.

No space here to do justice to the Jardins d’Eyrignac (Salignac; 05 53 28 99 71, eyrignac.com; £8.30) or the Jardins de Marqueyssac (Vézac; 05 53 31 36 36, marqueyssac.com; £6.30).

Trust me: both are stunningly sculptured homages to French gardening formality.

Where to eat

In the Dordogne, locals are either eating or talking about eating. Even in France, they’re noted for it. They like to eat fat ducks. And fat geese, truffles, salads with gizzards and potatoes in goose fat. Yet they aren’t fat themselves, and don’t have heart attacks, because they also drink their red wines (best are Côtes de Bergerac and Pécharmant). That’s the French paradox.

The best way to appreciate the abundance, and stock up the villa, is at markets. Most villages have them, but the key one is in Sarlat on Wednesdays and Saturdays. (Get there early or you’ll be parking in Calais.) Reward yourselves with a confit de canard lunch at La Petite Borie (12 Rue Tourny; 05 53 31 23 69; menus from £13), in the heart of town. Further unjustified indulgence can be had under the cliffs of La Roque-Gageac, where La Belle Etoile (05 53 29 51 44; from £25) has a more stylish take on similar traditions; or up in Domme, at Restaurant Cabanoix & Châtaignes (05 53 31 07 11, restaurantcabanoix.com; menus from £19), which marries local and exotic in a surprisingly funky little bistro.

When it comes to pushing the bateau out properly, though, hie to Lacave and the perfectly lovely Château de la Treyne (05 65 27 60 60, chateaudelatreyne.com; menus from £85). The 17th-century terrace by the river is where you propose to the loved one. If she refuses in this setting, save up and bring someone else next year. It’s bound to work eventually.

Tips

Do make the short trip to the Sarlat suburb of La Canéda, following signs for Gorodka (05 53 31 02 00, gorodka.com; £7). The artist Pierre Shasmoukine has executed an extraordinary conceptual assault on the wooded hillside, with totems, a dragonfly made from a real helicopter and much else besides. No idea what’s going on, but it’s absorbing.

Now action. You’ll want to canoe because everyone does, and it’s glorious — past cliffs, castles and forest on the Vézère or the Dordogne. At the confluence of the two rivers, Limeuil is a pretty base, and Canoes Rivières Loisirs a competitive company (05 53 63 38 73, canoes-rivieres-loisirs.com; about £13.50pp for 3.5 hours.

Handiest airport is Bergerac, which is served from 13 UK airports and Dublin. A week’s car hire starts at about £190 with Alamo (0871 384 1086, alamo.co.uk) or Hertz (0870 844 8844, hertz.co.uk).

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - "Amour", the French word for love, has been voted the most romantic word in the world in a pre-Valentine's Day survey of language experts.
It narrowly beat "amore", the Italian word for love, although Italian was named the world's most romantic language.

Italian words also dominated the top places in the list of most romantic words

"Belissima", which is both Italian and Spanish for "very beautiful", was voted the third most romantic word, while "tesoro", which is both Italian and Spanish for "treasure" (as in "Mi tesoro"/"My treasure") came fourth.

The survey was conducted by London-based Today Translations which polled over 320 of its linguists.

After Italian, they found the second-most romantic language was French, which was way ahead of Spanish and English in joint third place.

In the same poll, the firm asked its linguists to pick the least romantic-sounding way to say, "I love you" in any language.

The winner was Japan's "watakushi-wa anata-wo ai shimasu", ahead of the Welsh "rydw i'n dy garu di" and "qaparha", which, the firm noted, is Klingon, as spoken in the Star Trek universe.

We have been getting a few inquiries re eating out on Christmas and New Years Eve.

The Chateau in Eymet will be lit up by lasers for New Year's Eve and the council will be offering an aperitif to all reviellers.

La tour des vents in nearby Monbazillac have fabulous menus for both days, please visit their website for further details.

La cour d'eymet, the fabulous restaurant literally a minutes walk from Maison No. 20 will be open on both days but have yet to provide us with menu details.

Les pieds sur terre, the new and very chic restaurant situated on the Boulevard National will be open new years eve, menu details are as follows:

Mulled wine

At this time of the year I adore the smell of Christmas.....the tree, scent of Christmas candles, freshly baked gingerbread biscuits and my favourite smell, mulled wine.

I thought that I would share our secret recipe with you.

Ingredients
1.1 litres/2 pints red wine
3 cinnamon sticks
6 star anise
6 cloves
3 oranges, sliced
3 lemons, sliced
150g/5oz brown sugar (you can use honey instead if you prefer)

Method
1. Bring all of the ingredients to a simmer in a saucepan, then continue to simmer gently for 6-8 minutes, without boiling.
2. To serve, pour the mulled wine into six heatproof glasses.

Christmas in France

I thought that I would share some facts about Christmas in France......

Nearly every French home at Christmas time displays a Nativity scene or creche, which serves as the focus for the Christmas celebration. The creche is often peopled with little clay figures called santons or "little saints." An extensive tradition has evolved around these little figures which are made by craftsmen in the south of France throughout the year. In addition to the usual Holy Family, shepherds, and Magi, the craftsmen also produce figures in the form of local dignitaries and characters.

The craftsmanship involved in creating the gaily colored santons is quite astounding and the molds have been passed from generation to generation since the seventeenth century. Throughout December the figures are sold at annual Christmas fairs in Marseille and Aix.

The Christmas tree has never been particularly popular in France, and though the use of the Yule log has faded, the French make a traditional Yule log-shaped cake called the Bûche de Noël, which means "Christmas Log." The cake, among other food in great abundance is served at the grand feast of the season, which is called le rveillon.

Le rveillon is a very late supper held after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. The menu for the meal varies according to regional culinary tradition. In Alsace, goose is the main course, in Burgundy it is turkey with chestnuts, and the Parisians feast upon oysters and pat de foie gras.

Here in SW France, the locals feast on foie gras, canard, oysters which is all washed down with a glass of local wine - we have many to choose from as the area is reknown for its wine.

French children receive gifts from Pere Noel who travels with his stern disciplinarian companion Pre Fouettard. Pre Fouettard reminds Pere Noel of just how each child has behaved during the past year.

In some parts of France Pere Noel brings small gifts on St. Nicholas Eve (December 6) and visits again on Christmas. In other places it is le petit Jesus who brings the gifts. Generally adults wait until New Year's Day to exchange gifts.

Christmas time in France is joyous event and celebrated in cities, towns and villages with sparkling decorations, festive food, concerts, festivals, parades and, perhaps most importantly of all, Christmas markets.

When it comes to Christmas, France is not as commercially driven as in other countries, with less emphasis being on big spending and more being on seasonal events. With hundreds of Christmas markets taking place throughout France between late November and early January most are found in the larger town or cities, with Paris, Lille, Strasbourg and Avignon being the principle ones.

Traditionally, housewives in France would spend the weeks leading up to Christmas preparing the festive food and Christmas markets developed to supply them with the ingredients and products they needed. The first Christmas market to emerge in France was Strasbourg, in 1570. Here is our selection of top French Christmas markets to visit this winter.

Strasbourg

Alsace is home to over 35 Christmas market with the most spectacular "Christkindelsmärik" taking place in Strasbourg outside its landmark gothic cathedral. The stalls sell Bredele (festive Alsatian biscuits), other local produce, Christmas decorations and local crafts. The market has not only an Alsatian influence, but Germanic too; this makes it a very special place to visit at Christmas time. Marked by the scents of gingerbread, sweets, roasted chestnuts, cinnamon and mulled wine, the market is very atmospheric. Taking place from 28th November to 30th December.

Paris

The capital city has several Christmas markets in the lead up to Christmas. The main ones are Les Halles and La Defense, but spectacular markets also take place at Montparnasse, Place St-Sulpice and Noisy le Grand.

Les Halles: This famous Christmas market is set amongst the twinkling Christmas lights and decorations of Paris city centre. It is a traditional Christmas market, which attracts visitors from all over France who take the opportunity to do their Christmas shopping here.

La Defense: 25th November until 27th December. The Christmas market stalls at La Defense sell everything from crepes to roasted chestnuts, wood carvings to glass ornaments. There is live musical entertainment and even a large ice rink to delight children and entice visitors to take to the ice.

Lille

Lille is the first Christmas market to open each year, and the town transforms into a winter wonderland. On Place Rihour more than 80 chalets sell gifts, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. You can find regional specialities as well as arts and crafts from Russia, Poland and Québec. On the Grand Place a 50 metre high big wheel stands majestically to offer visitors splendid views across the city.
Taking place from November 18th to 30th December.

Avignon

The Christmas market in Avignon takes place on the Place de l’horloge, in the heart of the city. Over 60 chalets sell gifts, decorations and food to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Father Christmas has his own house with santons (traditional animated figures). Entertainment and parades take place throughout the Christmas period to accompany the market and the town is adorned in twinkling lights and dazzling decorations. Open everyday from 26th November to 2nd January.

Bordeaux

Under the illuminated trees of Les Allées de Tourny square, in the city centre, Bordeaux Christmas market takes place with a vast array of log cabins. Free sleigh rides and a visit to Father Christmas are just some of the events the children can look forward to. With the sound of Christmas carols and laughing children, Bordeaux city centre becomes a magical fairy tale. Open from the 26th November to the 30th December. Note Bordeaux is an 1 1/2 hours drive from Maison No.20.

Toulouse

The Christmas market is held in December in the very heart of Toulouse at the famous Place du Capitole. Chalets will provide visitors young and old with a feast for the eyes and taste-buds. Father Christmas can be found among the chalets, handing out sweets and other treats to children – the lucky ones will even get a chance to have their photo taken with him. Visitors can also admire a traditional Provençal nativity scene, marvel at the fairylike decorations in the Henri IV courtyard and take a stroll through the streets of Toulouse under the Christmas lights. The market is open from the 17th to the 20th December. Note Toulouse is a 2 hour drive from Maison No. 20.

Laon

The medieval hilltop town of Laon, which was the ancient capital of France between 7th to 11th centuries, is a magical setting for its Christmas market which takes place each year outside the Notre Dame cathedral. Its annual Christmas market includes a winter braderie with 40 different stalls offering food, drink, local delicacies and arts and crafts. For children the fun at the Laon Christmas Market includes a merry-go-round, a sledge set up in the cathedral square and a Father Christmas. The Laon Christmas market is taking place on various dates, including 6th December, 7th December and the 10th – 12th December. Further information

Mulhouse

The Christmas market of Mulhouse takes place in the heart of the city on the Place de la Réunion. This main market, together with smaller offshoots in surrounding squares and museums, offers a wide range of high quality products and gastronomic delights. The Mulhouse Christmas market is also unique in the fact that every year, the Land of Carols and Fabrics designs a Christmas fabric inspired by the collections kept at the Museum of Printing Fabrics. The fabric dresses the City Hall and façades of the Place de la Réunion, the pedestrian streets and chalets on the Christmas market. Taking place from the 24th November to the 27th December.

Montbéliard

From November 29th to December 24th, Montbéliard is illuminated by thousands of lights which provide the perfect backdrop to its Christmas market. Nestled near St Martin Church, the oldest protestant church in France (1601), about a hundred craftsmen offer gifts, flavours and scents. The town comes alive as musicians and artists perform on the streets. The wooden chalets are crammed with tasty produce and lovely craft products. Christmas decorations, figurines, wooden toys, candles, fine lace, jewels, soft fabrics and much more are available to purchase at the market.

Take a fabulous chateau and some grapes..

The very fabulous Chateau de Monbazillac

.....and what do you get? A fabulous place to visit that makes some of the best sweet wines in France. Or as it is called in Australia " sticky wine". The locals tend to pair it with foie gras and the end result is magic, one of my favourite meals.

The Chateau is called Chateau de Monbazillac and she sits high on the hill overlooking the fabulous vineyards of Monbazillac.

It is about a 15 minute drive from Maison No. 20 and we adore going there for picnics and also to buy wine as they have a fabulous wine centre where you can taste and purchase wine and the prices are very reasonable.

Another reason for going is the fabulous michelin starrred restaurant La Tour des Vents which sits high on a hill surrounded by vineyards and has an amazing panoramic view over the Dordogne Valley.

The views are spectacular and Marie Rougier (fabulous french woman chef) has a reputation for creating some of the best food in France with an emphasis on fresh local produce.

Enough about food, lets get back to the wine. As promised I am going to share some of the photos that Kees Terberg took of the Monbazillac vineyards, over the course of a year.

Autumn is my favourite time of the year in SW France as the colours remind me of the fall in the US. It is an important time of the year as the grape harvest takes place this month and is a fabulous sight to behold.

There are many events taking place to commemorate the harvest and another favourite event is the pumpkin festival in Issigeac at the end of the month.

As most guests that have stayed with us before at Maison de Poitiers and more recently at Maison No. 20 know, there are many nice restaurants in the village of Eymet.

There is even an Indian Restaurant, "The Eymet Tandoori" and a few kms from Eymet, our favourite restaurant Ma Maison, who have the most gorgeous courtyard not to mention the best foie gras in the area.

After 2 years of almost living on foie gras, I consider myself to be a bit of an expert and I think that Didier's is the best that I have tasted!

I must admit that we have been pretty busy this last month or so but that is no excuse for not seeing the new pizzeria that opened a little over a week ago.

So we decided after an apéritif with friends that we should "test it" just to ensure that it was okay before we send our lovely guests there.

The pizza's were very tasty, with the base being not too thin but not too fat and the toppings were generous.

The restaurant is called Le Pepistril and it is open every day apart from Monday.

Where does the horse riding part come into the equation, you may well ask? Well whilst we were waiting for our pizzas I picked up a brochure on horse riding, cheval24.

So for those of you who like pizza and horse riding or either of the two, you know where to come and stay :-)

Maison No. 20 - 2 bedroom apartment finished

As a lot of you know, we have been very busy working on our latest venture in Eymet; Maison No. 20.

Apartment No. 1 was completed early this year but as Apartment No. 2 is a lot bigger it took a lot longer than Apartment No. 1 to complete.

The apartment has been designed in such a way that it can be rented as an entire apartment, perfect for families or two couples that are holidaying together or purely on a bed and breakfast (B&B) basis.

It comes complete with self contained kitchen, flat screen TV, DVD player, infact everything that you need is provided right down to the french cane shopping bag so that you can shop like a local.

The furniture used in the apartment is a mixture of modern and antique pieces and has been sourced from around the world with many pieces being sourced from local brocantes and vide-greniers.

The first bedroom can either be configured for two single beds or 1 large super king bed (180 x 200 cms).

The building consists of two houses that have been merged which means that the bedrooms are some distance from one another hence privacy is assured.

Chambre 2 also contains a super king sized bed which was hand made to the owners requirements and has matching bedside cabinets.

There is also a lovely antique single bed perfect for a small child or alternatively for lounging on.

In September 2009 there will be a small shop opening for guests use only which will stock local products and french gift items (new & antique).

In Spring 2010, the 3rd and final apartment is scheduled to open and will be perfect for guests that have limited mobility or simply prefer to be on the ground floor.

The perfect day out - Chateau Margaux near Bordeaux

We have produced an insiders guide to Eymet, a one page guide to what we think are some of the key things to see and do during your stay with us at Maison No. 20. This can be found in the "Things to do" folder in the living area.

Today I found this list of things to do on the mrandmrssmith website and thought that you would be interested in reading about some of the activities that they recommend.

Dordogne Activities
Highlights the best Dordogne has to offer, from art and culture to fun-packed activities; we've even found the most inspiring place to enjoy the views from.

Worth getting out of bed for........

Viewpoint
The village of La Roque-Gageac, near the charming mediaeval town of Sarlat, clings to the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley. The most striking view is from the ruins of the troglodyte fort at the top of a vertiginous ladder.

Arts and culture
The Dordogne is dotted with castles and châteaux. Two of the best are the Renaissance Château de Puyguilhem near the town of St-Jean-de-Côle and the very grand Château de Hautefort, with its wonderful gardens, northwest of Brive-la-Gaillarde.

Something for nothing
The suitably haughty statue of Cyrano de Bergerac takes pride of place in Bergerac’s Place Pélissière. The statue’s famously protruding nose is often stolen.

Shopping
In Bergerac, Bille de Bois in Place du Docteur André Cayla is filled with old-fashioned wooden toys. There’s so much fabulous local wine to choose from; try the velvety Monbazillac, a sweet white wine often drunk to mark special occasions. There are markets in Bergerac on Wednesdays and Saturdays, Lalinde on Thursdays, Libourne on Fridays and Sarlat on Saturday. Bergerac’s fleamarket sells antiques and bric-à-brac on the first Sunday of the month.

Daytripper
Book two weeks in advance to visit the wine cellar of Château Margaux, north of Bordeaux. The neoclassical château produces some of the Médoc region’s finest wine. The cellars are closed in August and during the harvest (http://www.chateau-margaux.com/).

Activities
There is good canoeing on the Dordogne, between Argentat and Beynac. Copeyre in Souillac hires canoes and mountain bikes (www.copeyre.com). The Bergerac area is ideal for wine-tasting; contact www.vins-bergerac.fr for details. L’Essentiel, on Rue Guadet in St-Émilion, promotes ‘boutique’ producers and is stylish yet unstuffy (www.essentiel-vin.com). There’s a challenging nine-hole golf course at Château les Merles (http://www.lesmerles.com/).

An interesting list but we have a few secrets of our own up our sleeve, and I plan to share with you over the next coming weeks some of the things that we think are unique and make this area so special.

Castillonnes 750th Anniversaire Tea Towels

As many of you know, the village is which Maison de Poitiers is situated, Castillonnes, is celebrating its 750th anniversary this year so there are a variety of events taking place.

As part of the commemerations, a special tea towel has been created. It is made of high quality cotton and is white with blue printing.

As you know, I was born in the youngest country in the world, which is how they are promoting New Zealand at present around the world so it is a little surreal when the village that you live in is celebrating it's 750th anniversary.

Hence Castillonnes is getting ready to party this year and we have a lot of events taking place including music concerts in the square and also medieval banquets complete with costumes. My very lovely and patient French teacher's husband (Didier) has taken a series of photographs which are going to be used as part of the 750th program.

The one that I sharing with you today is my favourite, I am sure that you will agree.

French Labor Day - Fête du Travail.

It is a tradition in France that on May 1st, May Day - French Labor Day/Fête du Travail people will pick wild Lily of the Valley Muguets in French).

Also, it is very common to see roadside stands or people in front of supermarkets selling Lilies of the Valley, often to gather funds for an organization.

Lily of the Valley is a small plant that gives off a very nice smell. The tradition is: you go out and gather the Lilies of the Valley, enjoy the spring weather and get a little exercise. Then, when you have collected your Lilies of the Valley, you put them in a vase in your home to bring their perfume home.

In France, church bells stop ringing on the Thursday before Good Friday and do not ring again until Easter Sunday morning. The reason for this is that all the bells are supposed to fly to the Vatican carrying with them the grief of those who mourn the crucifixion; then these flying bells (cloche volant) return on Easter Sunday bringing with them lots of chocolate and eggs.

Another French custom is a contest of rolling raw eggs down a gentle slope – the surviving egg is the victory egg symbolising the stone that was rolled away from Christ’s tomb. Kids also throw eggs in the air – the first one to drop theirs is the loser who must pay a penalty.

Today the Bergerac Office de Tourisme have advised that they have a new video showing attractions in Bergerac and nearby villages.

I have just watched and must say it is great as it shows the wine museum, Chateau de Monbazillac, Tobacco Museum, many surrounding villages including Issigeac, Monpazier and Beaumont, the Cadouin Abbey and many scenes in the old part of Bergerac.

Market days

I love market days in France. It is a tradition that has been going some 700 years in this part of France and I love them as it is an excuse to meet up with friends and also buy some wonderful local fresh produce.

Yesterday we went to the market in Issigeac, the sun was shining and the market traders were out in force meaning that things are returning to normal. If it is grey a lot of traders do not show up so it means that the locals do not either so market days in the winter are rather grey whereas in the summer they are bright and sunny.

The brocante/vide grenier (empty attic or car boot) season has started again and we are looking forward to picking up some more lovely french items.

For those of you who may not know the difference between a vide grenier and a brocante, the main difference is that at a brocante all the sellers are professional antique sellers whereas anyone can sell at a vide grenier hence the translation 'empty attic".

Coq au vin

This chicken in red wine dish traditionally uses older roosters because they contain a lot of connective tissue, which creates a richer broth when cooked and rooster blood to thicken the sauce at the end of cooking.

Serves 4.

INGREDIENTS

Coq au vin
2 tbsp olive oil
90 gm butter, coarsely chopped at room temperature
1.6 kg free-range chicken, jointed
150 gm piece of pancetta, cut into 1 cm pieces
12 small pickling onions
125 ml (½ cup) brandy, warmed
750 ml (3 cups) Beaujolais
500 ml (2 cups) chicken stock
3 parsley stalks
2 fresh bay leaves
2 sprigs of thyme
2 small heads garlic, halved lengthways
1 tbsp plain flour
200 gm mixed small mushrooms such as pine, Swiss brown and button, trimmed
¼ cup coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Mashed potato
1 kg desiree potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters
50 gm butter, coarsely chopped
125 ml (½ cup) pouring cream

1. Preheat oven to 160C. Heat oil and 20gm butter in a large casserole over medium-high heat, add chicken pieces and cook for 10 minutes, turning until golden, then transfer to a plate and keep warm. Add pancetta and onions and cook for 5 minutes or until golden, drain off excess fat. Return chicken to pan, pour over brandy and ignite with a long match. When flames are extinguished, add wine, stock, herbs and garlic and season to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil, cover and place in oven for 1 hour or until chicken is tender and cooked through. Transfer chicken, onions and pancetta to a warm dish, cover with foil and keep warm.
2.Strain cooking liquid through a fine sieve, discarding herbs and garlic. Heat sauce in clean casserole over medium heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until reduced to 2 cups. Combine flour and 20gm butter into a paste, whisk into sauce and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until sauce has thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
3. Meanwhile, heat 50gm butter in a frying pan over medium heat, add mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes or until golden, season to taste and set aside.
4. For mashed potato, cook potatoes in boiling water for 15 minutes or until tender, drain and pass through a potato ricer into saucepan, add butter and cream, season to taste and stir to combine.
5. To serve, return chicken, pancetta, onions and mushrooms to sauce and cook for 5 minutes, turning to coat and warm through. Serve chicken and sauce scattered with parsley, with mashed potato on the side.

After the storm.............

I guess that most of you have heard about the storms that affected SW France, there were winds up to 140kms an hour which combined with heavy rain resulted in a lot of flooding and damage to land and buildings.

Most villages in the area were affected in some way or another - most villages were without power which is a scarey thought in this day and age as we all rely heavily on electricity. It was a rather humbling experience as it makes you realise how much you take running water and electricity for granted.

Bonjour,

I have just returned from having the most wonderful facial at our local beauty salon in Castillonnes. Michelle is "tres gentil" and gives the most wonderfully relaxing facial, 2 hours for 39 euros is pretty good value in my book. She is going to provide me with a treatment listing so that I can include this in the Maison de Poitiers Chambre information pack.

Her salon is literally a 2 minute walk from Maison de Poitiers and she loves the opportunity to practise her English should you feel inclined to converse in English!

She only uses Mary Cohr products which are completely natural products are are derrived from plant extracts.

It is still cold here and we have more snow forecast for Saturday.........................

We awoke to find eveything here blanketed in snow, the village looks amazing! I have posted a photo so that you can see for yourself! I will also create an album so that you can see some more snow!

Today it is blue sky and a little chilly here. I love the blue sky but are willing it to be warmer as we watched a programme about an english couple relocating to Australia and it made me a little homesick.

Yes I am a kiwi but I have spent many years working in Sydney and as a result have an Australian passport which I adore as the photo in it is a lot nicer than my Kiwi one :-)

For those of you that do not know me I am a "40 something" kiwi who has spent the last 15 years of my life travelling and working around the world. I have lived in Dubai, London, Sydney, Mumbai and Istanbul and have travelled extensively as a result of working for large corporate companies.

Not quite 2 years ago I discovered France and spent the first year setting up a boutique style B&B "Maison de Poitiers" in a tranquil 13th century village called Castillonnes which is not far from Bergerac airport.

The next project has commenced which is luxury holiday apartments (maison no. 20) in a lively 13th century village called Eymet which is not far from here.

A couple of the rooms have already appeared on the top 100 rooms on mydeco.com which was a nice suprise.

I had better get back to work.
